Simulated work experience report

First-year assistant: Frances Wanyan Keung

Research and Mood board:

In this simulation work, I mainly left the character design part of the two main characters to my first-year helper Frances. I chose the character design to collaborate with because my knowledge in this area leaves something to be desired and the process of building the character is not well developed back at the first stage. Comparatively, Frances has a background in illustration art, therefore, we conceptualised the main character together. First of all, we did some research separately according to the background of the story, for example, where is the character based? Where is it from? How old is she? And then we combined the information all together.  From personality to appearance, we drew many different versions together and eventually we came to a satisfied version of it. During the whole process, she was very well dedicated to the projects and always proposed new ideas for my project and its truly inspiring and helpful for me.

-brainstorm of the characters

Character design :

I assigned Frances to complete the two main characters digitally with character turnaround since I have drawn them all on paper, which is a bit scribbled. She managed to finish the task on time and in the process, we actively communicated whether some of the character design perspectives made sense. She also helped me to think about whether the colour portion of the character would fit well in the picture or be isolated from the background for a better perception.

-Work on the characters’ turnaround

In conclusion, we made good teamwork because of good communication between the two of us. We agreed on a fixed role and time schedule in advance so there are no conflicts in time and drawing, overall it was a good simulated work experience to have.
