Future Directions 01: Reflection from the Graduation Animation

  1. CHARACTER MOVEMENT STUDY

When it comes to animation, I realise that there is something about the movement of a character that is more difficult than abstract drawing. I felt that my characters were often deformed or their movements were not smooth. When I am drawing characters, it gets messed up in my head.

However, at the same time, I realised that I might be better at the visual effect type of animation, such as drawing effects, deformations, or abstract perspectives on scenes.

2. COLLABORATIONS

The output of this film depends on how well it works with the composers, and it was hard to trust them at first. The wait was a long time. Even though I used very detailed descriptions and timings for every communication with the MUSIC and SOUND designers, it was still hard to achieve the desired result. This included music’s overplaying of the piece and a lot of cultural differences that led to different perspectives.

3. COLOUR BALANCE/CORRECTION

Colour confusion was a problem I found during editing. The long duration of the shoot inevitably led to changes in lighting and angles. I’ll need to leave more time for post-production to make adjustments in this area in the future, as it’s not insurmountable, it just takes a lot of time and effort.

Left one is more black and white but the right one has orange in it.

4. TIME MANAGEMENT

The process was super long. It was something I expected, but I was still surprised when it happened, and it put an endless amount of stress on me both physically and mentally. Although at this stage I’ve mostly finished up to expectations, there are still a lot of details that couldn’t be perfected in time and I’ll continue to improve them after submission.

Overdued time is pretty long...

5. PERSPECTIVES

In terms of storytelling, a lot of the time I get stuck in my own vision and it’s hard to get out of it. This leads to the problem that I can understand what is happening in the animation, but the viewer may not be able to fully understand it. In the future, I need to create my animation from multiple perspectives so that others can better understand what I am trying to convey.
